Tenure-Track Position in Media Production at Point Loma Nazarene University

The Department of Communication Studies is seeking candidates for a full-time tenure-track teaching position in Media Production. The University is seeking an individual capable of excellent teaching, committed to significant involvement with students both within and outside of the classroom, and interested in participating in the academic unit’s service learning and/or undergraduate research programs.

The Department of Communication Studies offers three academic degree programs: Communication Studies, Organizational Communication and Media Communication, and is home to studio facilities and co-curricular activities for Point TV and Point Radio. We offer minors in Public Relations, Communication, Cinema Studies and Media Communication. The department also collaborates with the Online Undergraduate Studies Program in Strategic Communication. We have a strong commitment to quality teaching, and passion for building Christian community with students, a tradition of high impact academic practices, and experience in using our skills for collaborative and interdisciplinary work.

Responsibilities begin August 2023 and will include teaching a variety of undergraduate courses in the Media Communication Program (which includes four (4) concentrations: Multimedia, Screen Performance, Production, and Film Studies). Academic rank and compensation levels will be based on degrees earned and related experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide instruction in the area of Media Production studio television production, field television production, TV/Film studio management, new media, narrative storytelling, digital media and some general education courses.
  • Successful candidate will work strategically with diverse colleagues, students, parents and community members.
  • Engage in personal scholarship and scholarship with students (where possible)
  • Advise students academically, spiritually, and socially
  • Participate in departmental activities and governance
  • Serve on university faculty committees/working groups and perform other normal faculty duties
  • Contribute in preparing students for a wide range of careers in television, film, radio, and new media production, as well as media management. The Media Communication program also prepares students to work in narrative and documentary film, news, sports broadcasting and production, music, advertising, corporate media, and Christian-religious media.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Ph.D./Terminal degree in Media Production or a related field; An MA degree is the minimum requirement with experience in Media Communication,
  • Experience: Evidence of a commitment to excellence in (undergraduate/graduate) teaching. Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching students from diverse backgrounds is preferred.
  • Philosophical: Thorough commitment to the concept of Christian liberal arts education and a desire to work in a Christian university. Supportive of the religious and educational goals of the university and its sponsoring denomination.
  • Personal: Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement. In addition, faculty agree to live in agreement with PLNU’s Community Life Covenant.
