Presentation Title: “Reforming Hollywood: How Protestants Fought for Freedom at the Movies”

Date: 10/28/15     Time: 8:00-9:00 pm, EST

Description: Although Protestantism was close to America’s cultural center well into the twentieth century, it is conspicuously absent in cinema studies. Reforming Hollywood: How Protestants Fought for Freedom at the Movies recovers this missing piece of film history. In this presentation, author William Romanowski highlights key moments in the longstanding and complicated relationship between Protestants and Hollywood. This narrative identifies key dynamics that go to the heart of the role of religion in a democratic society, from the advent of a movie rating system in the late 1960s, to late twentieth-century Evangelical ventures, to contemporary issues like net neutrality.
