Description: The Azusa Pacific University Department of Communication Studies invites applications for a faculty member who will teach introductory and advanced skills and theory classes in journalism, media studies, and public relations, with an emphasis on digital media and the evolving impact of technology. Additional opportunities may include coordinating the journalism program. Position begins Fall 2018.
The department houses three majors—journalism, public relations, and communication studies—12 full-time faculty, nearly 25 part-time/adjunct faculty, and approximately 400 major and minor undergraduates. The Journalism major offers three emphases for a Bachelor of Arts degree: News and Storytelling, Media Studies, and Sports Journalism. As part of the journalism program, the department supports a convergent/integrated media environment, known on campus as ZU Media. ZU Media includes a digital and traditional student newspaper (ZU News), digital and traditional magazine (ZU Magazine), a television/online studio (ZU TV), and an online radio station (ZU Radio). Additionally, the department engages a nationally competitive forensics team, and a national honors society (Lambda Pi Eta). The department plans to offer an M.A. in Communication Studies in the near future.

Responsibilities:
This full-time faculty member will teach a range of courses in our journalism and public relations programs, such as Mass Communication, Digital News Gathering, Media Law & Ethics, Media Entrepreneurship and Economics, Global Journalism and Media Systems, and Public Relations and Social Media. The candidate will help develop students’ digital and print journalism abilities, as well as their understanding of how to be effective journalism and public relations practitioners in today’s digital age.
Depending on experience and expertise, s/he may also assist in advising the department’s student publications and teach additional courses across the department’s curriculum. Other duties include advising and mentoring students, participating on committee assignments at the department and university levels, carrying out a program of scholarly research, and participating in all faculty meetings. Commitment to the university’s faith statement is required of all candidates.
Level: Open (depending on qualifications)
Qualifications: Ph.D in Journalism, Media Studies, or related area, and a commitment to teaching excellence in liberal arts, and an active scholarship agenda. Candidates must also adhere to Azusa Pacific University’s Evangelical Christian tradition. Faculty members are required to sign a “Statement of Faith” (available at http://www.apu.edu/about/believe) and adhere to the policies outlined in the Faculty Handbook.
Experience: Prior experience teaching at the collegiate or university level, as well as professional journalism experience strongly preferred.
Workload: Responsible for teaching 24 units per year.
