Description: Being a young, affable, female academic, students often gravitate to my office hours and open up about their struggles. Many have wept in my office. And while I certainly listen and point them to the appropriate support services available on our campus, at times I go a step further: I share my story as an offering of hope. When my students or others around them make destructive choices, when their lives are unimaginably shattered and seemingly beyond repair, I can empathize. I’ve been there. I’ve made those choices, I’ve darkened those doors, I’ve experienced that trauma, I’ve wallowed that desperation, and I’ve poured out those tears. But God was able to reweave the broken threads of my story and use it for good (Genesis 50:20; Romans 8:28). As a Christian teacher-scholar at Ohio University, a research-intensive public institution, my time with students is characterized by acknowledging and embracing the power of questions, the power of prayer, and the power of presence, which I will explore in greater depth during this webinar.
